Plugs & anal
Flared base, graduated sizes, lubricant: the essentials for safely trying out anal plugs.
The rule that takes precedence over all others
A toy intended for anal use must have a flared base or a retention ring that is wider than the body of the object. Without it, there is nothing to prevent the object from sliding back up, and this is the leading cause of emergency room visits in this area. No compromise is reasonable on this point, no matter how strong the urge may be at the moment.
Take it step by step
Many brands offer sets of three sizes; this is the best place to start. Begin with the smallest size, take your time, and only move up a size once the previous one feels comfortable—not all in the same evening. The anal area does not self-lubricate: you need lubricant—more than you might think—and you need to reapply it as you go.
Materials and Care
Soft silicone is forgiving for beginners. Glass and metal are firmer, very smooth, and lend themselves to temperature play. For vibrating or remote-controlled models, just make sure they’re watertight before submerging them in water. Clean with warm, soapy water after each use, dry thoroughly, and never share with another person without a condom or proper disinfection.
